SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Optimizing Part Quality and Cost: Managing the Turbulent Topic of Cooling Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Injection molding is often selected as a manufacturing process when tight tolerance\, high quality parts are required. To meet the ever-increasing customer demands for their parts\, while controlling part cost\, it is important that designers\, molders and tool makers understand as early as possible how cooling could affect their part quality. Cooling can affect quality metrics like dimensional stability\, cycle time\, and part strength. This webinar will highlight how injection molding simulation can be used at all stages of the product and mold development cycle to identify risks and find solutions for issues that can mitigate those risks. After attending the webinar\, attendees will better understand: \n\nHow part designers and molders can better identify how part design may influence part quality and cycle time without having a cooling line layout.\nHow molders can understand how efficient their proposed mold construction and cooling line layout will be\, and how it might affect part quality.\nHow to identify if advanced cooling line strategies like conformal cooling\, or use of high conductivity inserts can benefit the optimization of the cycle time\, without sacrificing part quality.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Understanding Ductile to Brittle Transitions
DESCRIPTION:In our analysis of failed components at The Madison Group\, the most common type of cracking we see is brittle fracture. However\, in most cases\, when these polymeric components are tested in a standard tensile test they behave in a ductile manner. The question is what changed in these materials to cause these typically ductile materials to behave in a brittle manner. The failure mechanisms that are often driving these cracks to appear are creep rupture\, environmental stress cracking\, impact\, and many others. These failure mechanisms have one thing in common: there was a ductile-to-brittle transition in the material that caused the brittle cracking to occur. \nThere are many factors that will cause a typically ductile material to behave in a brittle manner. In this webinar we will identifying what these factors are and explaining how these effects can lead to failure if not properly accounted for. By the end of this presentation\, you will have a better understanding of: \n\nWhat factors cause a ductile-to-brittle transition.\nHow these factors vary from material to material.\nWhat you can do in your design or material selection to account for this phenomenon.

SUMMARY:Make Perfect Plastic Parts: Material Characterization for Success - WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:The need to shorten product development timelines while mitigating risk is a real challenge for designers and program managers. While significant time and effort is spent on the design and material selection of a given component\, the focus on how the part will be manufactured is often limited. This silo-ed approach can lead to unexpected delays or performance issues when first article parts are received. Many molders and tool designers will turn to injection molding simulation tools\, like Autodesk Moldflow\, to help mitigate this time crunch. Additionally\, they will use the results to make data-driven decisions regarding their mold design and overall process. However\, confidence in the results needs to be high. This webinar will focus on how proper material characterization of your thermoplastic resins can improve the confidence of your tooling strategies\, and better identify risks that may need to be mitigated. \nAfter the seminar\, attendees will have a better understanding on how their material characterization can influence their confidence in make decisions regarding: \n\nThe gating strategy and pressures required to fill the mold.\nThe tendency for parts to develop sink marks or voids due to narrow limited packing.\nPredicted shrinkage rates and tolerances selected for their component.

SUMMARY:DFMA for Common Joining Techniques in Plastic Parts - WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Many presentations have been given that highlight the fundamentals of proper plastic part design. However\, an individual plastic part is rarely used as a stand-alone product. Rather these plastic components are typically integrated into a larger assembly or assembled with other molded components. Additionally\, in today’s design environment multiple individuals could be designing mating components in different sub-assemblies that have little knowledge of the downstream assembly or performance requirements. This can lead to costly rework\, and poor system performance. This presentation will highlight how selection of common secondary joining operations could influence your part design\, and material selection considerations. \nFrom this presentation\, the attendee will come away with a better understanding of how plastic component design and material selection decisions may need to be influenced by the use of the following secondary joining/assembly operations: \n\nPress-Fits\nFasteners and Threaded Inserts\nSnap-Fits

SUMMARY:Plastics Properties: Its All About the Temperature - WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:The mechanical properties of plastics will vary depending on the temperature. Significant changes in short-term properties such as strength and ductility\, as well as long-term properties including creep and fatigue can be observed\, even over a relatively small range. This instability is due to the inherent molecular structure of polymeric materials and the resulting viscoelasticity. Having a very different structure\, metals do not exhibit this type of behavior\, and the variation in plastics can be overlooked. Many applications expose plastic components to temperatures above and below ambient.  In order to avoid failure\, it is important to understand how the properties will change across the use range. \nAt the conclusion of this event you will: \n\nHave a better understanding of how plastic mechanical properties change as a function of temperature.\nRecognize that there are both lower-end and upper-end temperature limits for polymer materials.\nBe more familiar with the testing that can be utilized for evaluating the effects of temperature on plastics\, as well as tests that are commonly used but provide very little useful information.

SUMMARY:Right-weighting versus Light-weighting Polymeric Components - WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Public perception and economic pressures are constantly pushing OEM’s\, designers\, and molders to minimize their use of plastic materials in their molded products. While consumers are pushing for more responsible use of plastic materials\, they are unwilling to sacrifice part quality. To accomplish these light-weighting goals\, many engineers and designers are utilizing optimization software such as generative design and topology optimization. However\, many times these optimization codes focus solely on the structural aspects of the design\, and only use short-term loading data to make these critical design decisions. They tend to ignore common plastic manufacturing constraints and durability concerns with long-term loading. This siloed approach leads to expensive modifications late in the product launch process that ultimately hurt or negate the initial effort placed up front to reduce the part mass. \nThis webinar will address the issues that can arise when taking this short-term\, siloed view\, and will highlight how manufacturing also needs to be considered during the optimization process to ensure successful products. Through case studies\, the presentation will help the attendees gain a more holistic view of the light-weighting process so they can better optimize their best plastic part design. \nAt the end of this presentation the attendee will… \n\nLearn simple design guidelines for properly light-weighting plastic components and assemblies.\nUnderstand what material properties manufacturers and OEM’s need to properly design their plastic components and ensure product reliability.\nRecognize how injection molding and tooling constraints can be accounted for to holistically optimize the product and reduce time to market.
